he 'Coach' is a talented and highly successful contract consultant...specializing in Marketing, Merchandising, Training and Coaching to all facets of the Beverage Industry and other FMCG categories.

After a star-studded professional football and college coaching career, he spent the next 15 years with The Coca-Cola Company primarily on the International scene...before taking early retirement and setting up his own business enterprise. Coach Thornton moved his entire operation to SE Asia in 1995 and worked exclusively in that part of the world till he expanded his horizons to take on special projects in Europe, Africa, South America and the Middle East for such major clients as Seagram's Wine & Spirits, Eukanuba Pet Foods, Al-Rabie Juices and the Empresas Polar Group of Companies. Over the past 26 years, Coach T has worked in 78 countries, territories and islands on five continents. Now that's what you call - GLOBAL EXPERIENCE!

His patented Merchandising Principles Clipboard is the foundation for the process of building new 'Merchandising Cultures' within many local and multi-national organizations. It culminates with a Market Impact Team Blitz that motivates employees from all departments while energizing the marketplace at the same time...guaranteeing a minimum of +15% volume growth in sales.

He prides himself on being able to impact young people by providing them with inter-personal skills and motivational tools in which to increase their confidence levels while enhancing the total teamwork concept. He also has that innate ability to 'Make Positive Things Happen' in the marketplace!

An accomplished journalist, Coach T writes a regular column for Beverage World magazine plus a weekly column on American football for the Thailand Bangkok Post, the region's leading English newspaper. He was also a major contributor to a new, recently published book entitled... "A Slip In The Rain" that chronicles his former team, the 1967-72 Toronto Argonauts. He was honored by author Craig Wallace who asked that he write the Foreword to the book...and his aggressive, flamboyant running style which was created in abstract by Canadian graphic artist, Shane Kelley - appears on the Cover.

Coach T lives in Makati City - Metro Manila, the Philippines but commutes regularly to Bangkok, Thailand which is like his second home.

ecently, Coach T wrapped up a detailed project that involved changing the Merchandising Culture for the Destileria Limtuaco, the oldest Philippine manufacturer of wines and spirits in conjunction with it's subsidiary company Convoy Marketing. Intensive sales and marketing training first took place...followed by a series of Market Impact Teams in the Manila marketplace. There was a remarkable increase in the motivation and confidence levels of the organization and hopefully this continues in the future. Coach also established several close personal friendships with his former colleagues - that remain to this day.

Coach Thornton completed a series of demanding Global Market Impact Team exercises for the IAM's company, manufacturers of the premium pet food brand - Eukanuba. Blitzes were held in the countries of Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Chile, Korea, Mexico and Thailand, producing outstanding sales results of up to +29% for the many Pet Shops and Veterinary Clinics that participated. All in all, 433 stores were fully merchandised, over 4,000 extra facings were gained, close to 5,000 pieces of POS placed and 205 display units erected. A total of 206 people took part in gaining more than ONE KILOMETRE of extra space for Eukanuba Products

Coach also conducted two exciting Merchandising Workshops in Saudi Arabia for the Al-Rabie Juice Company in the cities of Riyadh and Jeddah. His teams actually created large header-boards in class which were then immediately installed in downtown supermarkets the following day. This type of activity goes a long way to building company morale within the merchandising force.

Prior to that, Coach T spent nine months working for TPDL, the Coca-Cola bottler in Thailand where he created the Lightning Squad that assisted the Ratchada Sales Centre personnel in both sales and merchandising. He began by bringing in the Thai Army to instill pride and discipline into the sales force and subsequently, volume went up +37% in the first three months.

t's been eight years that Coach T has been contributing his knowledge and expertise to the industry through his Coaching Points column in Beverage World magazine - the Global edition and he is now into his 5th season at writing feature columns on American football, which continue to gain momentum when appearing every Sunday morning in the Thailand Bangkok Post. Much of his past work can be viewed by double click on the Articles Button at the top or bottom of this page.

In his spare time, which there isn't much of...Coach continues to provide input and edit copy related to his Biography which will be "intertwined with Coaching Points associated with giving readers the knowledge to take calculated risks and make better business decisions, while enhancing inter-personal skill levels. After both worked closely together on "A Slip In The Rain" and became good friends, Canadian author, Craig Wallace felt that Thornton's unique transition from professional athlete to world renowned marketing specialist, with all his ups and downs in-between...just had to be documented. Publication is set for the fall, 2007.
